Here's what happened in 2014

  • Sunday, October 26, 4:00 - 6:30pm

Our annual Halloween in the 'Hood celebration plans to be a fantastic time for kids (and adults) of all ages! Our enthusiastic team is making arrangements for a wicked good time. Please be in touch with Margaret Summers, msummers@iontrust.org, if you would like to volunteer to help out. More details to come.

  • Saturday, October 25, at dusk (6:30ish)

Have a scream with Screen on the Greeen - an outdoor movie at the Westlake Amphitheater. Halloween themed movie to be announced. More details to come.

  • Saturday, October 18, 5:30pm

Local band Porto Seguro will play a special evening of music from Brazil including choro and bossa nova. It's fun, laid back, rhythmic, soulful and great music to share with friends! Choro music developed in Brazil in the early to mid 20th century and has some parallels to American ragtime. This fun instrumental music requires virtuosic playing combined with quick improvisations. It melds European and African influences into a distinctively Brazilian combination of up-beat melodies backed up with a syncopated vibe that is at once both joyful and full of soul. Choro is considered a precursor to bossa nova and other Brazilian popular styles.
About the band:Local musicians Susan Conant, flutes, John Holenko (locally known for his work with the Hungry monks), mandolin, Tom Noren, guitar, Jonathan Gray, bass, and Matt Maisie, percussion, make up Porto Seguro(which means safe harbor). It was the first place the Portuguese explorers landed in what is now a city located in Bahia state, Brazil.

See this link for more information on choro music:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choro

July 4th was really fantastic this year – MANY thanks to everyone who participated and volunteered to help make the Parade on I’On and the Concert at Westlake Amphitheater such a special day. We had a tremendous turn out for the parade which included at least forty floats. The Salute on the Square featured a ceremonial flag-raising and the reading of the Declaration of Independence. We were delighted to have members of the armed services participate in the reading, the singing of the National Anthem, raising of the flag and march in the parade. What a great privilege to have officers from the Citadel, the Choir Group from the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek and the Honor Guard from Joint Base Charleston. In the late afternoon, we had hundreds of neighbors and friends gather at the Amphitheater for a concert with Plane Jane and fireworks by neighbors. It was a great day for “bringing neighbors together”!!

MEMORIAL DAY FUN - MAY 25TH

We had a wonderful time at our neighborhood picnic. Thank you to everyone that came out and enjoyed such a beautiful day with firends and neighbors.

AFTER THE BRIDGE RUN CONCERT - APRIL 5TH

Join us for a relaxing afternoon with good friends, music and food! We have a wonderful bluegrass band, The Bluestone Ramblers, scheduled to play as well as O’Brion’s and Autobanh Food Truck on hand to sell food and beverages.

This annual Trust event is free and open to the community, so do invite others who would enjoy the day.

Bring picnics, chairs and blankets to enjoy the fun!

Please note, West Shipyard between Hopetown and Moultrieville will be closed to traffic from 3:00 to 7:00pm for the safety of those attending the event.

A FIELD TRIP - SATURDAY, APRIL 26 AT NOON

Please join us on the 26th as we kick off the 2014 Lecture series. We will begin by exploring our waterways around Hobcaw Creek. Our talk will be led by and on the property of Pepe Hernandez, the current owner of the property known at Hobcaw Point. His home is built on land that was once known as the largest colonial shipyard in South Carolina, Pritchard's Shipyard. Originally 340 acres, Pritchard's Shipyard was a very prosperous business that first began in 1753 and continued until 1860. It was later purchased by the Navy.  Pepe and his family have worked with the state for the past 20 years to preserve the area and continue to keep the history alive for future generations. Several important digs have been conducted on the site. He would now like to share it with us. As his neighbors, it is very important that we too know of the history that surrounds it.

We plan to meet on Saturday, April 26 at 12noon.  If you would like to join us, please contact Margaret Summers at msummers@iontrust.org or by phone 843-881-7541 to reserve a spot.

Please dress comfortably and wear suitable shoes as we will be walking around areas that may be a bit wet. We look forward to sharing Pepe's knowledge and lovely home, gardens, and docks with you. He is truly a steward of the land, intent on sharing it with others and ensuring that its history will continue to be passed down for future generations.

Celtic Concert with Castlebay

We had such a wonderful time on Thursday, March 6th with Castlebay members Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee. They blend history, legend, tradition and experience into their personable performance style. Their concerts feature poignant ballads sung in Lane's ethereal soprano and Gosbee's rich baritone interspersed with joyous tunes played on Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle and tin whistle. Castlebay treats the audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic.

We had a Oyster Roast on Sunday, February 9th  - We were delighted to see so many neighbors come out and were so lucky to have the most perfect weather for it!  Thank you to all who attended and those volunteers who helped out.
